Lofty Nest
Lofty Nest is a thoughtfully designed 400-square-foot ADU in Van Nuys that demonstrates how compact living can be both highly functional and comfortable. The design maximizes every square foot through a carefully planned layout that balances efficiency, openness, and everyday livability.
A custom loft sleeping area is suspended above the living space, freeing the main floor for an integrated living room, workspace, and kitchen while maintaining a strong sense of spatial continuity. Strategic planning of the full bathroom, built-in storage, and circulation paths ensures that each element serves multiple purposes without compromising comfort or aesthetics.
A shared laundry, storage, and utility zone acts as a flexible buffer between the primary residence and the ADU. This arrangement allows the unit to function either as an independent rental or as an extension of the main home for multigenerational living, providing long-term adaptability for the owner.
By combining efficient space planning with warm materials and thoughtful detailing, Lofty Nest transforms a compact footprint into a welcoming and versatile living environment.
Task
Design a 400 SF Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) that maximizes functionality within a compact footprint while providing a comfortable and flexible living environment. The project required the integration of a lofted sleeping area, workspace, kitchen, full bathroom, and sufficient storage, along with a shared utility zone connecting the ADU to the primary residence. The design prioritizes efficient space planning, adaptability, and seamless integration with the existing property.
