Light Bender
Although Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) may be compact in size, they can still benefit from an abundance of natural light without compromising the privacy of the main residence. By incorporating a gap between the roofs, we can achieve an optimal ceiling height, allowing natural light to flood the space. This design choice not only enhances the livability of the ADU but also preserves the privacy of the primary home. Additionally, the space between the roofs can be utilized for attic storage, providing a practical solution for maximizing the available square footage.
Task
The goal of this project was the design and construction of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) that optimize natural light and privacy while also maximizing usable space by creating a gap between the roofs. The main focus was on achieving an effective balance between adequate ceiling height for natural light in the ADUs, maintaining privacy for the main residence, and utilizing attic storage in other areas of the property.
