The Apex

This detached ADU is designed to fully utilize the allowable buildable area within a typical Sunland R1 lot. With a compact footprint, it integrates an open-concept kitchen/living/dining area, a full bath, and a private bedroom—all within ADU zoning and setback requirements.

The layout emphasizes spatial efficiency without compromising functionality or privacy. We leveraged the rear yard’s dimensions to create a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor zones, ensuring natural light, cross-ventilation, and independent access

 

 

 

 

Task

The layout is thoughtfully designed to reflect the homeowners’ specific needs. Intended as a residence for their parents-in-law, this backyard unit prioritizes comfort, accessibility, and family connection. Key features include generous ceiling height and direct access, allowing the children to easily visit, share meals with their grandparents, and play together in a safe, open environment. Large, vertically oriented windows introduce abundant natural light and views of the sky, ensuring the interior feels bright, airy, and welcoming—never cramped or enclosed.
