Intimate Retreat
This project introduces an 800 SF detached ADU in Northridge, designed as an independent living space with its own access, private backyard, and a distinct sense of identity separate from the main residence.
The design focuses on creating a spacious and comfortable experience within a compact footprint. An open-concept living area, combined with a vaulted ceiling, enhances the sense of volume and natural light, allowing the interior to feel larger and more connected. The private bedroom and bathroom wing provides a quieter, more intimate retreat, while strategically placed closets and service areas help improve privacy and reduce sound transmission.
By balancing independence, openness, and thoughtful spatial organization, Intimate Retreat transforms a small-scale ADU into a complete home experience.
Task
Design an 800 SF detached ADU that functions as a fully independent home while maximizing comfort, privacy, and spatial quality within a compact footprint. The challenge was to create a clear separation from the main residence through independent access and a private outdoor area, while using thoughtful planning strategies to enhance the sense of openness. The design prioritizes an open-concept living space, a vaulted ceiling to expand the perception of volume, and a carefully organized private wing to provide a quiet and comfortable retreat.
