Quartet Forms

For this small-lot subdivision in West Los Angeles, we approached the design of the four separate homes as a composition of distinct materials and cubic forms. Each façade is unique, yet together they form a harmonious whole. The overall design is like a musical piece—four instruments playing in unison—where form and space interact to unify the structure while offering varied views and functional living areas.

With limited yard space at ground level, we transformed upper-floor setback requirements into an opportunity, incorporating balconies and rooftop decks that enhance both outdoor living and architectural character. These elevated spaces not only extend the usable square footage but also connect residents to the surrounding urban context, offering moments of light, air, and openness.

Task

Careful attention was given to massing, proportion, and circulation, ensuring that each unit feels distinct yet connected, private yet porous. Material choices were curated to provide texture and warmth while emphasizing the sculptural nature of the forms. The result is a modern urban infill project that balances density with livability—an ensemble of residences that feels intentional, rhythmic, and human-scaled.
